Blending with Nature & Ancient Ingenuity 🪨
Do you see untapped potential in this yard? Well, our client did too! This particular corner of the backyard offered an enticing option for our consultation team to consider with the client… You might’ve guessed it: terraced raised beds! A perfect solution for this tough-to-traverse hill. The practice of terracing is a good example of independent invention in human ingenuity. It was created independently across various noncontiguous cultures centuries ago, with the fundamental idea remaining the same: create a way to make steep land more productive. The subsequent and converging “terrace” idea effectively slows the runoff, promotes infiltration, and reduces erosion.
Ancient Incan agricultural terraces.
Let the terracing begin! Our slope had a couple of fruit trees and some shrubs to conserve, but other than that, we were creating a clean slate of empty beds for the client to plant whatever their heart desires.
We tend to opt for organic shapes over the right-angle with our installs, which is why we love working with material like this Tennessee fieldstone. It allows us to build walls that follow contour lines and blend into the landscape. We’re also setting our plantings up for success with on-contour walls, as they will effectively and evenly slow rainwater and infiltrate it into the ground for the plants to soak up.
All done! Whether you're looking to address a challenging slope or add a touch of timeless beauty to your yard, we’d love to help you make it happen. Let’s create something that will stand the test of time!
