Our clients who come to us with zero attachment to their traditional sod lawns are always favorites of our consultants. Truly a blank canvas for our folks to work their magic. Here’s the property (shown above) before the CoFo intervention. Together with the client, the consultants decided to remove the entire lawn and go for our low-mow seed mix, a few corners of pollinator gardens, a couple of veggie raised beds, a dry creek, and a rain barrel. The end of the dry creek has a little pollinator garden bordering it. Two raised beds a short walk from the front door allow for easy harvesting. The dry creek will infiltrate rainwater and charge the surrounding beds with passive irrigation. Another small pollinator bed bordering the low-mow seed mix that was sown. It generally takes a couple of weeks for seed germination to take hold. Our low-mow seed mix offers a practical way to support pollinators (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/271739594_Pollinator_assemblages_on_dandelions_and_white_clover_in_urban_and_suburban_lawns) , mow less, stop using fertilizers and herbicides, reduce watering, and still maintain a “conventional” look that helps when dealing with strict HOAs or the pressure of keeping up with neighborhood norms. Soon this low-mow lawn, paired with the perennial flower gardens, will be buzzing with pollinators. And that’s the magic of starting fresh. Turning a blank, resource-hungry lawn into a more ecologically-friendly and functional system. Buzzing, blooming, filtering water, feeding soil life, and feeding the client.
